Dr. Tumani Nyajeka - An E. Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism
The Foundation for Evangelism, The Interdenominational Theological Center and Gammon Theological Seminary are pleased to announce the establishment of the E. Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism at ITC/Gammon. The professorship will be designated The Cornelius and Dorothye Henderson Chair, an E. Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism in memory and honor of Bishop Cornelius Henderson and his wife, Dorothye.
Bishop Henderson was elected by the Southeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church in 1996 as Bishop and assigned to the Florida Annual Conference. He had just begun his second four-year term in Florida when he died on December 7, 2000 after a battle with cancer and kidney failure.
Henderson's greatest passion was evangelism. At the time of his election, he observed that the biblical mandate to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..." was directed to Christians as the "great commission", not the "great suggestion".
Henderson left behind a legacy of love. He loved children, he loved those who did not know Jesus, he loved the pastors and laity under his care, he loved the dispossessed and the marginalized, and most of all, and he loved his family.
Henderson was survived by his wife, Dorothye Carithers Henderson; a daughter, Leah Dor-Ltn Henderson Smith; a son-in-law, Disraeli Smith Sr.; and two grandsons.
When elected a bishop, he was serving as president-dean of United Methodist-related Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta. Previously, he was senior pastor of Benn Hill United Methodist Church, one of the largest congregation was given awards for receiving the most members on confession of faith (new Christians) and having the largest net increase in membership in the Atlanta-College Park District. Membership increased from 400 to more than 4,500, making Ben Hill one of the fastest growing churches in the denomination.
He had also served as a district superintendent in the North Georgia Annual Conference; a staff member of the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville, Tennessee; director of the North Gerogia Program Council; and pastor of churches in Atlanta, Griffin, Jonesboro, Athens and Commerce, Georgia.
Cornelius Henderson was an academician, a pastor, a bishop, and a servant of God's people. The Foundation for Evangelism and ITC/Gammon Theological Seminary are pleased and privileged that the professor of evangelism chair is named in memory and honor of Bishop and Mrs. Henderson.
